Because there was only one pup, Fada was not going into labor. So, we ran a progesterone test this morning to make sure she truly was due and Bob was ready, then did a C-section this afternoon.
Fada is still a little groggy and I am sure sore. Given anesthesia and discomfort, not the doting mother yet that she has been in the past. She will lay down with Bob and let him nurse and also cleans him, but left to her own devices is staying outside of the box right now.
At the moment, all is quiet and peaceful. Hoping it stays that way!
I 'believe' that as females get older in primitive breeds - the hormones appear to diminish making natural whelp harder.
ReplyDeleteLikely because unlike humans who want the dogs to be 2 or 3 before puppies - nature prefers them to start earlier. Glad you have a good outcome.
Interesting theory, and makes some sense. She had two pups in her previous two litters. When examining the uterus yesterday, the "non-Bob" horn showed remains of what my vet feel was a resorbed pup. So her body wasn't carrying two to term this time. She was also spayed during the procedure.
